Qualifications and Experience in the use of Agrichemicals

Academic qualifications

NTC Horticulture first class pass distinction in Horticultural Science obtained at the Technikon Pretoria awarded on the 01.05.73

National Diploma in Parks and Recreation Administration from the Technikon Natal awarded 01.12.1979

Certificate in Turfgrass Management (Cum Laude) from the Technikon Pretoria awarded on 06.07.84

This certificate went into great detail when it comes to the setting up of spray equipment and the spraying of premium sports turf such as rugby and football stadia as well as golf greens and fairways

All of the above qualifications cover the handling and application of the following Agrichemicals, Herbicides Pesticides, Nematicides, Molluscicides and fungicides

 
Registration to handle and use Agrichemicals

 
Growsafe Certificate of Qualification allowing me to apply agrichemicals in accordance with the New

Zealand Code of Practice for the management of Agrichemicals NZS 8409. Certificate number S6753 

Approved Handler to use store and dispose of Agrichemicals as defined inNZS8409 on the 15.06.2006. Certificate number 28.724

 

Parks Department of the City of Durban

I worked for the Parks Department of the City of Durban from about March - April 1971 until the end of February 1998.

 

I was trained by the Parks Department of the City of Durban during the first months of my employment as a student in both the use of horticultural pesticides, fungicides, Nematicides, herbicides and Molluscicides.

 

I had at least 25 years of experience in the use of both pesticides and herbicides while working for the Parks Department of the City of Durban.

 

I both calibrated and operated knapsack type sprayers as well as tractor operated spray rigs for use on sports fields Parks Department of the City of Durban.

 

The following is a list of the main agrochemicals, pesticides and herbicides applied while I was employed by the Parks Department of the City of Durban. These agrichemicals were applied by knapsack sprayer, tractor mounted boom sprayers on sports and amenity turf as well as by hand.

 

The main agrichemicals used were

 

Herbicides

 

Gramoxone the active ingredient being Paraquat dichloride

MSMA the active ingredient being organo-arsenate

Roundup the active ingredient being Glyphosate

Various herbicides with the active ingredients being 24 D and Dicamba

Simazine with the active ingredients being Diuron

 

I applied herbicides to kill tree using the following methods

frilling, ringbarking and basal stem treatments using the following Herbicides.

Tordon the active ingredient being Picloram

Garlon the active ingredient being Triclopyr

Chopper the active ingredient being imazapyr

 

Pesticides

Dursban the active ingredient being Chlorpirifos

Rogor E the active ingredient being Dimethoate

Sevin the active ingredient being Carbaryl

Malathion the active ingredient being Mercaptothion

Metasystox the active ingredient being Oxydemeton-methyl

 

Nematicides

Temik the active ingredient being Aldicarb

 

Molluscicides

Baysol the active ingredient being Methiocarb

Various brand names the active ingredient being Metaldehyde

 

Bluff Tropical Nursery

From 1971 till 2007 I was a joint equal joint partner in the wholesale and retail nursery Bluff Tropical Nursery, selling a range of native and exotic, outdoor and indoor ornamental plants.

During this time I did all the spraying in the nursery using pesticides, Nematicides, herbicides and fungicides.

The spraying was undertaken both with knapsack sprayer as well as with a motor driven spray equipment.

 

The main agrichemicals used were

Simazine with the active ingredients being Diuron

Creating Turf Ltd in New Zealand

From 2005 till 2007

One of our services was the management of turf grass where the application of both Herbicides and Pesticides was carried out.

After the prescribed study and testing on the 14 April 2005 I was awarded a Growsafe Certificate of Qualification allowing me to apply agrichemicals in accordance with the New Zealand Code of Practice for the management of Agrichemicals NZS 8409. Certificate number S67537

After further training and testing I was tested and approved as an Approved Handler to use store and dispose of Agrichemicals as defined inNZS8409 on the 15.06.2006. Certificate number 28.724

 

Applied both herbicides and pesticides mostly with a motorized self-propelled boom sprayer, but also with a knapsack sprayer.

From 2014 till present

Working as a consultant in association with Ziyenzeka Weed Control identifying both indigenous and alien plants as well as controlling invasive alien plants at the King Shaka International Airport.

Stump treating of invasive alien plants as listed in the CARA regulations

Frilling of invasive alien plants as listed in the CARA regulations Agrichemical being used
